Red Bull Flugtag Team Will Soar for SHOC Foundation
Portland, Oregon, Saturday, August 2nd, 2008.
Five members of the Rose City Rollers roller derby league are competing
in this year’s Red Bull Flugtag competition.
The team, named the “Funky
Four Plus One More” are creating a hand-built,
human-powered “flying roller skate” with wings that will be flown and
piloted by one of the team members. The craft will be pushed off of a
30 foot platform over the Willamette River.
Over the past 2 years the Rose City Rollers have raised over $6,500.00
for SHOC. Not bad for a group of ladies who all have full time jobs in
addition to their time on the track.
The derby gals will once again be using their valuable time and community
spirit to raise funds for SHOC from businesses and individuals prior
to the event. The goal is to raise $10k. Donors may pledge in dollars
per foot the craft “flies”, or a flat fee, payable directly to the 501(c)(3)
non-profit. Donations can be made at www.shocfoundation.com or to the
representative stationed at the Flugtag event at the Funky Four’s land
space. There will be many skaters at the event to help and support their
team and SHOC.
There is a strong connection between the team and the SHOC Foundation.
Roller Derby was invented in 1935 by Oregonian Leo Seltzer. Seltzer’s
granddaughter, Phyllis Lang has overcome three bouts of ovarian cancer
and is involved with her friend Sherie’s foundation. Lang first linked
SHOC with the Rose City Rollers in 2006 and the league has supported
the foundation ever since.
The mission of the SHOC Foundation is to provide funding for ovarian
cancer research, to educate women about early detection of ovarian cancer
and to empower women recovering from ovarian cancer to find emotional,
spiritual and physical balance and well being.

One More, please contact April Rautio. If you would like more information
